Academics & Training

Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program

Dear Prospective Orthopedic Residents:

Welcome to the Montefiore Orthopedic Surgery Residency Training Program. We are a unique, comprehensive and rigorous training program that prepares graduates to become outstanding surgeons, clinicians and thinkers. Our program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and is associated with Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Each year we accept six residents. We are located in the New York City Borough of the Bronx which is the most diverse area in the country.

All of our training sites are within the Bronx and include the four major Montefiore Hospitals (Moses, Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, Weiler and Wakefield campuses) where all orthopedic subspecialties are robustly represented. For trauma training, our residents rotate on the busy orthopedic trauma service at Jacobi Medical Center. Our clinical offices and ambulatory surgery center are also situated in the Bronx at The Hutchinson Metro Center.

Our formal didactic education program includes multiple weekly conferences and teaching sessions. Additionally, we have a full-time training lab where new interns learn and practice basic surgical skills, techniques and principles for one month prior to commencing clinical rotations. The lab also serves as a space for residents and faculty to perform educational research as well as practice and hone techniques and skills prior to live surgery.

We actively strive to recruit a diverse group of orthopedic residents interested in a rigorous and optimized residency training experience. Individuals interested in providing expert orthopedic care to all in an urban academic setting are particularly encouraged to apply. We invite you to learn more about us.

Sincerely,

See why so many applicants choose Montefiore-Einstein

Residents choose Montefiore because of the tremendous clinical experience, the collaborative environment and the mentorship opportunities offered. Residents are provided with broad surgical exposure, structured didactics and research opportunities. Over time, they gain progressive independence and surgical confidence. Our curriculum is taught by experienced faculties, and the program provides access to advanced technology, innovative surgical practices and state-of-the-art facilities and laboratories.

Residents work within a large network of hospitals and collaborate with specialists from Montefiore’s nationally ranked departments. The Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program is supported by Montefiore Medical Group, Children’s Hospital of Montefiore, Jacobi Medical Center (complex trauma) and our Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Our comprehensive training program comprises of the core curriculum, grand rounds, numerous orthopedic conferences, symposia, the anatomy lab, the surgical skills lab and exposure to various surgical specialties.

We provide an educational environment that is student centered, in which residents earn graduated responsibility. Our residency training is success based and supportive, led by nationally renowned specialists.

The teaching program of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery comprises faculty members who are fellowship trained in all of the orthopedic subspecialties. The department performs over 7,000 surgical procedures per year, providing residents with extensive surgical training in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

Residents rotate among the following locations:

  • Montefiore Moses Campus (Oncology and Spine)
  • Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (Pediatric Orthopedics)
  • Montefiore Wakefield Campus (Joint Replacement and Trauma)
  • Montefiore Hutchinson Campus (Ambulatory Surgery, such as Sports Medicine, Hand and Upper Extremity, Shoulder, Elbow, Foot and Ankle)
  • Montefiore Weiler Campus (Spine)
  • Jacobi Medical Center (Complex Trauma)
  • Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Research facilities)

Montefiore, in collaboration with our Albert Einstein College of Medicine, provides residents with various research opportunities. The department is engaged in a wide array of clinical research, which is routinely presented at both national and international venues. Additionally, for interested residents, there are opportunities to participate in basic science and/or translational research in our advanced laboratories, working with full-time scientists and physician-researchers.

At the end of their fourth year, orthopedic surgery residents are expected to develop a research project that culminates in a presentation to the faculty. In addition, residents often submit their research for presentation at national conferences.

Our residents are a diverse group of professionals who are dedicated to providing high-quality healthcare to underserved populations. A close-knit group, residents share both work and life experiences and enjoy all that New York City has to offer.

The residency program is located in the Bronx, which is at the crossroads of the world’s many cultures. The Bronx is home to the Bronx Zoo, the New York Botanical Garden, City Island, Van Cortlandt Park and Yankee Stadium. Just a short subway ride away are the world-famous museums and performing arts centers of Manhattan. Residents typically live in hospital housing or close by in Riverdale, lower Westchester or Manhattan.

Applicants selected for interview will be offered one of three available interview days (typically interviews are held on Friday’s in December and January). The visit extends for a half day session and consists of multiple interviews, each involving 2-3 surgeons. Additionally, a tour of the facilities and a brief informational session is provided.

Applicants selected for interview will be provided with the opportunity to informally meet and interact with representatives from the residency the evening prior to their scheduled visit. This social event is designed to allow prospective residents the chance to meet current residents, ask questions, learn about the program, and glean a bit of insight into what residency at Montefiore entails.

Over 800 applications are reviewed each year and approximately 90 candidates are extended an interview. Resident selection is based upon merit as judged by academic achievement, letters of support, professionalism, communication skills, research participation and personal characteristics including motivation and integrity. Montefiore is an equal opportunity employer and grants equal opportunity to applicants without regard to race, religion, gender, marital status, age, sexual orientation, or other specific factors.

Fellowships

The Montefiore Department of Orthopedics is currently offering a number of advanced training opportunities. These one-year, subspecialty-specific fellowships offer a tremendous opportunity for in-depth and comprehensive clinical and research exposure designed to build upon general orthopedic training. They are intended for the individual with specific interests in these subspecialties.

Learn more about our fellowship programs:

The Orthopedic Oncology Division offers an Orthopedic Oncology Fellowship with a unique focus on translational laboratory research in the field of sarcoma. The one-year position provides fellows with clinical exposure, operative experience and formal didactics. The fellowship is particularly suited for candidates interested in pursuing a career as a clinician-scientist.

The fellowship is designed to foster and balance autonomous and independent translational research with mentorship and guidance. Weekly research meetings with the entire division provide an opportunity to review experimental aims and design as well as data and manuscript preparation. Didactics include a surgical indications conference, a multidisciplinary tumor board, protected didactic time with both pathologists and radiologists, and a weekly journal club. In addition, the fellow will be expected to realize a substantial project that culminates in one or more publications by year’s end.

The fellow will work closely with three full-time orthopedic oncologists and research personnel:

  • David Geller, MD
  • Bang Hoang, MD
  • Rui Yang, MD

The fellowship is supported by Montefiore, Children’s Hospital at Montefiore and our Albert Einstein College Medicine.

Application Guidelines

All candidates must have completed an orthopedic surgery residency program, must have passed the USMLE Step 3 exam, and must be eligible for a New York State license. Only H-1B visas are supported and applicants must allow for adequate processing time to ensure an on-time start.  The program participates in the SF Match. The Montefiore and our Albert Einstein College of Medicine Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery Fellowship is designed to expose the orthopedic surgeon (who has already completed a formal orthopedic surgery residency program) to subspecialty training in pediatric orthopedic surgery. The fellow serves as an integral part of the team and is responsible for overseeing all aspects pertaining to the day-to-day care of our patients and their families as well as contributing to the education of our medical students and residents.

This one-year program combines both clinical training and research. Clinical training will encompass all areas of pediatric orthopedics, including trauma, acute infections, scoliosis, complex hip disorders, pediatric and adolescent sports medicine, complex limb deformity and neuromuscular disease. In the research area, the fellow will be expected to complete a research project of publishable quality during the fellowship period.

The fellowship program includes grand rounds and basic science conferences; pediatric orthopedic surgical indications conferences, held weekly; educational sessions on core pediatric orthopedic topics, held weekly; and monthly research meetings and a monthly journal club.

The fellow will work closely with four full-time pediatric orthopedic surgeons:

  • Jacob F. Schulz, MD, FAAP, Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery Fellowship Program Director

  • Eric D. Fornari, MD, FAAP

  • Melinda S. Sharkey, MD

  • Alexa Karkenny, MD

The fellow will be able to pursue a wide variety of clinical and basic research projects, utilizing the ample clinical volume and broad-based laboratory facilities of our center. In addition to a clinical research project, the fellow may be involved in current areas of ongoing research within the orthopedic department in the areas of spine, hip, sports medicine and neuromuscular disorders.

Fellowship locations will include Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center, Jacobi Medical Center and Hutchinson Campus Outpatient Surgery Center.

Application Guidelines

A valid New York State medical license and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate are required. Our fellowship participates in the SF Match. Selected applicants are invited for interviews. This is an unaccredited fellowship.

For more information, contact Courtney Matlach at cmatlach@montefiore.org.

The Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship program at Montefiore offers an extensive and comprehensive clinical experience in the operative and nonoperative management of shoulder and elbow disorders. The fellowship is a one year clinical program with a significant research component. The Fellow is provided with the opportunity to work closely with the attending surgeons on the Shoulder and Elbow Service. Exposure to patients presenting with a wide variety of pathology, including conditions of traumatic, degenerative, and athletic etiology is offered.  Opportunity to participate in the orthopedic management of college athletic teams adds to the experience.

The Fellow will evaluate patients pre- and post-operatively and will participate actively in the operative cases. Advanced methods of both arthroscopic and open surgery are performed with the most current techniques. There are over 400 shoulder and elbow procedures performed annually. In addition to the clinical education during attending office hours and weekly conferences, the Fellow participates in the formal didactic lectures provided and takes an active role in resident education.

The Fellow is required to complete two research projects. The projects can be either clinical or basic science in nature and must be completed and in publishable form by the end of the fellowship year. To that end, the Fellow participates in our Multidisciplinary Shoulder Research Group along with a research coordinator, rheumatologists, physical therapists, pain management physicians, as well as our shoulder surgeons.

Applications should be submitted by November 1 through the San Francisco match. This program is part of the ASES Fellow selection process. Interviews are conducted in February. Positions will be offered in accordance with the SF Match process.

For more information, contact Courtney Matlach at cmatlach@montefiore.org.

Our program offers exceptional training in all aspects of adult reconstruction. Our institution performs approximately 1800 total joint replacements per year among 7 fellowship trained adult reconstruction surgeons. The fellow can expect to participate in 500-600 cases during their fellowship year. We are a tertiary referral center and there is ample exposure to primary and revision total joint arthroplasty, including complex cases such as: DDH, periprosthetic infection, fracture, and severe deformity (congenital, acquired, and post-traumatic). The fellow will be exposed to a variety of surgical approaches for total hip arthroplasty, including posterolateral, anterolateral, and direct anterior. There is an opportunity for exposure to hip preservation for interested fellows. Responsibility in operating room is progressive and based on demonstration of requisite skills. There are biweekly lectures the fellow will be expected to attend and there is an expectation that the fellow will complete 1-2 research projects, culminating in a publishable manuscript. Fellows will also be responsible for teaching and supervising residents and medical students. All fellows are required to have successfully completed an orthopedic residency program prior to fellowship and hold an active and unrestricted New York State medical license by the beginning of their fellowship year.
